Treatment centers are bullshit (i'm french, i know this very well). Try finding "Le Pari" ("the bet"), a movie about two dudes trying to quit smoking. Religious shit works when you have no science, indeed, and when your patients have no knowledge whatsoever about.. anything.Just.. "don't buy it".. It worked for me about coke (it led to some sleeping problems, but i didn't drink any for more than 3 months).Sadly, some people are more easely addicted than others. Nature is not fair

scientific method does apply to psychology, because psychology is as scientific as anything. It's not as easy as "stop the bleeding" or "i can't get an erection", but it's doable.Psychologues are there to help you with those problems, as well as lemon pills are there to help your flue. It's harder, longer than other deseases because we don't know well how the brain works, but it does work as long as you accept the treatment (medical and or psychological).

I agree, penn and teller do not propose solutions, they say this sucks. However, if you do want to quit drinking.. you just "don't buy" drinking. if you really want to stop, just do it. it's not easy, and you need friends to support you, to occupate you (i know, i've had my own addictions, more childish, like candy and coke..)..Yes you need some willpower, and maybe some medical help, but telling yourself "i'm the victim" is not going to work.

hmmm. yet another example of the common theme I've found in twelve step critics, they offer no real solution. If just quit drinking so much worked, nancy reagons marry band of winners would have fixed this society in the eighties when they told everyone to "just say no".

I think that's the point - addiction is a psychological problem, not a disease. Are you actually asserting that superstition is superior to modern ways of addressing mental disorders? You think that prayers, voodoo dolls and talismans are the best solution?

The scientific method does not apply to psychology. It's messier and harder to evaluate. Damn you REALITY!

In Europe, treatment centers "claiming" effectiveness that cannot be statistically proven are criminally liable and prosecuted (poor scientology). It must be a worldwide conspiracy/delusion! Wikipedia certainly will help you with the origins of the steps and speak to the efficacy. Unless they are in on it.

Penn and Teller are often pushing inaccurate information or unintentionally pushing misinformation. The egyptians noticed that cutting people's hands off (or worse) wouldn't stop individuals from obtaining and drinking alcoholic liquids until they reached their preferred state of inebriation. They did notice that if the members became religious, they were more LIKELY to stop. This was a common "discovery" throughout a number of cultures in history. P&T fail.

"I was an ass hole when I drank..."~ Brough1111Um, that's what we call a "pre-existing condition". |
